In 1988 RF Systems invented a new type impedance matching transformer and registered it under the protected trade name "Magnetic Longwire Balun". Although there are many cheap copies with names as longwire balun, universal antenna matcher and so on, these are mostly standard 1:9 un-un transformers and cannot be compared with the original RF Systems Magnetic Longwire Balun. The RF Systems MLB is an impedance matching transformer, based on a special ferrite, developed and produced at RF Systems. The MLB matches short end-fed wire antennas to the 50 ohms antenna input impedance of the receiver.

There are 2 types available: the standard MLB for those who want to make their own wire antenna and the MLB Marine, a heavy duty version in a stainless steel housing, which can be clamped to any wire or conductor presumed that it is insulated from the ground. The marine version can also be clamped to a stay of sailing yachts, transforming the insulated stay into a broadband antenna.
Thanks to the heavy duty construction this marine version can withstand any climate and is often used in hurricane area's and by professionals for antennas at embassies and in military and governmental monitoring stations.
