Active antennas are small antennas with built-in electronics. They are mainly mentioned for locations without enough space to hang a full size passive antenna on a sufficient height. Another advantage is that most RF Systems active antennas are full bandwidth antennas, covering long-, medium and shortwave. This means that the receiver can be tuned over the full frequency range, without the need of tuning the antenna to the desired frequency, which makes computer control or memory tuning of the receiver nearly impossible. Even when there is enough space to hang a full size passive antenna, active antennas are unbeaten for the reception of VLF, long- and medium waves.
